Gabion Mesh
Gabion headwalls, wing walls, and Reno mattress aprons engineered to dissipate culvert discharge energy and protect channel beds, side slopes, and road embankments from scour.
Description
Gabion headwalls, wing walls, and Reno mattress aprons engineered to dissipate culvert discharge energy and protect channel beds, side slopes, and road embankments from scour.
Culvert outlets concentrate flow into a narrow, high-velocity jet that can erode the receiving channel, undermine the pipe, and damage the road or railway embankment above it. Zhongman's culvert outlet protection system combines stone-filled gabion headwalls or wing walls with a flexible Reno mattress apron at the invert and downstream transition. The headwall retains the fill around the pipe, the wing walls guide expanding flow, and the rough mattress surface spreads energy while shielding erodible soil. Because the system is permeable and flexible, it manages seepage and minor settlement more reliably than a rigid, unfiltered slab in many remote or variable-ground conditions. Units are made to the civil drawing and supplied flat-packed with connection materials.
The protection works by replacing vulnerable soil with a continuous, tied wire-and-stone layer. Angular rock creates surface roughness, reduces near-bed velocity, and resists particle movement. A mattress apron can deform into a developing scour hole while continuing to cover the bed, provided it has adequate length, thickness, and connection at the structure. Gabion wing walls protect the outlet shoulders from lateral erosion and help prevent flow from cutting behind the system. A compatible geotextile or graded filter keeps subsoil fines from pumping through the voids. The complete detail is inspectable, repairable, and can often use local fill stone, reducing concrete delivery and formwork requirements at isolated crossings.
We manufacture double-twisted basket and mattress units in heavy galvanized, Zn-Al alloy, and polymer-coated wire. Common basket wire ranges from 2.7 to 3.4 mm before polymer coating, with mesh and stone size selected together so fill cannot escape. Mattress thickness, apron width and length, cutoff depth, headwall height, wing-wall angle, pipe opening, and diaphragm layout are customized. The quotation should state pipe diameter or box-culvert dimensions, design discharge or outlet velocity, channel-bed material, expected tailwater, exposure chemistry, stone grading, and applicable standard. Zhongman can package gabions, mattresses, lacing, bracing, fasteners, and geotextile as a single bill of materials for each outlet location.
The outlet foundation must be excavated to stable material and shaped so no unsupported void remains under the baskets or apron. Filter fabric or a graded granular filter is placed where specified, with overlaps protected during stone placement. Baskets are assembled square, laced to adjacent units and the pipe detail, internally braced, and filled in controlled lifts. The apron must remain fully connected to the headwall and extend far enough downstream and to each side of the predicted scour zone. Cutoffs or buried edges help prevent undermining. Engineers should check uplift, piping, outlet velocity, tailwater, debris, and maintenance access; a mattress sized only from pipe diameter may be inadequate where the receiving channel is steep or highly erodible.
Zhongman turns the outlet drawing into a labelled, export-ready gabion package rather than supplying unrelated standard cages. Our team schedules each headwall, wing wall, mattress, diaphragm, lacing bundle, and accessory against the outlet reference number, which reduces sorting mistakes on projects with many crossings. Production checks cover wire, mesh, dimensions, coating, and bundle count. We support EPC contractors, road authorities, distributors, and drainage suppliers with samples, packing lists, material documentation, and container planning. Submit the plan and section drawings with the hydraulic design data to receive a coordinated material proposal and quotation.
