Zhongman gabion check dam systems are low-profile, stone-filled barriers installed across gullies and drainage channels to reduce water velocity and control progressive erosion. Unlike an impermeable concrete barrier, a gabion check dam allows part of the flow to pass through the rock voids while dissipating energy across the crest and downstream face. The flexible basket body can accommodate modest settlement and uneven channel beds without brittle cracking. Systems are supplied as project-sized double-twisted baskets with diaphragms, lacing wire, bracing wire, and optional Reno mattress aprons for toe protection. They suit distributed erosion-control works where contractors need durable units that can be flat-packed, assembled with local labour, and filled with suitable local stone.
A correctly spaced series of check dams shortens the effective channel slope, slows peak runoff, captures transported sediment, and creates stable steps along a degrading gully. Permeability reduces the pressure difference across the structure and encourages gradual drainage after storm events. The stone surface is rough, so it dissipates flow energy better than a smooth hard barrier and can support vegetation as sediment accumulates. Double-twisted mesh remains stable even if one wire is locally damaged, which is valuable where floating debris or maintenance equipment may strike the face. For severe drops, Zhongman can combine the check-dam body with an upstream cutoff detail and a downstream mattress apron to reduce piping, flank erosion, and toe scour.
Projects can specify 8x10 or 10x12 hexagonal mesh, wire diameters generally from 2.7 to 3.4 mm, and heavy galvanized, Zn-Al alloy, or polymer-over-Zn-Al coatings according to exposure. Basket length, height, crest width, wing-wall geometry, diaphragm spacing, and apron dimensions are made to drawings rather than limited to one catalogue size. Diaphragms normally divide long units into stable cells and control stone movement during filling. Lacing wire, preformed spirals, bracing ties, geotextile filter fabric, and matching Reno mattresses can be packed in the same shipment. For procurement, provide channel width, design drop, expected flow depth, bed material, water chemistry, required standard, and preferred stone size so the mesh and coating can be matched to the site.
Installation begins with a stable keyed foundation that extends into both banks so water cannot bypass the ends. Contractors assemble and brace the baskets, connect adjacent cells, place graded durable stone, and close the lids while keeping the crest and downstream profile consistent with the design. A filter layer may be required beneath and beside the structure where fine soil could migrate through the rock. Check dams are widely used in road drainage, agricultural gullies, mine-water channels, construction-site sediment control, burned-watershed restoration, and remote catchments. Final dimensions and spacing should be confirmed by the project engineer because discharge, channel slope, sediment load, and failure consequences vary greatly between sites.
