Bridge scour is the removal of bed or bank material by accelerated flow around piers, abutments, and constricted crossings. Zhongman's bridge scour protection system uses double-twisted gabions and Reno mattresses to create a continuous, permeable armour layer around vulnerable foundations and approach slopes. Mattresses protect broad bed areas, gabion toe walls retain bank profiles, and thicker baskets form stable transitions near abutments. The connected mesh system keeps individual stones together even where local turbulence would move loose riprap. Its flexibility lets the armour follow moderate bed deformation without opening the large cracks associated with rigid protection. Every system is manufactured to the engineer's layout, with diaphragms, lacing, bracing, and optional filter geotextile packed by installation zone.

Performance in River Crossings

The rough stone surface dissipates energy and reduces the shear stress transmitted to the underlying bed, while the wire enclosure prevents progressive loss of individual armour stones. A properly detailed launching apron can settle into the edge of a scour hole and continue protecting the foundation as the bed adjusts. Permeability relieves pore pressure and allows natural exchange through the revetment, but a filter is still important where fine subsoil could migrate. Double-twisted mesh provides redundancy because localized wire damage does not cause the whole panel to unzip. Coating is selected for abrasion, water chemistry, salinity, UV exposure, and design expectations rather than chosen only on initial price.

System Configuration

A bridge package may include mattress aprons around piers or abutments, buried toe units, bank revetment panels, upstream and downstream transitions, and gabion walls for approach-slope support. Wire diameter, mesh opening, coating, cell size, mattress thickness, and rock grading follow the project specification. Installation and Inspection

Construction normally starts with bed preparation and placement of a graded or geotextile filter without wrinkles or damage. Units are assembled, connected into a continuous mattress, internally tied, and filled with durable stone that meets grading and abrasion requirements. Special attention is required at edges, cutoffs, pier interfaces, and transitions to unprotected bed because discontinuities can initiate failure. Underwater placement may need prefilling, lifting frames, or work platforms and must follow a project-specific method statement. Post-flood inspections should check settlement, exposed edges, broken wires, displaced lids, vegetation or debris accumulation, and scour beyond the protected footprint. Damaged areas can often be repaired locally if detected early.
